Electronic equipment on airplanes?

I always wondered about this: what is actually stopping anyone from using a cell phone on a plane, other than a healthy fear of death?

The fact that the cell phone companies themselves don't like it. A cell phone in the sky is different from a cell phone in the sky, because it skips towers without reference to the normal cell handoff process.

Still, the best anti-terrorist device is a phone. Of course, never leave a message on the voice mail if you are going to die in the next five minutes. Goodbye isn't good enough, is it?
